You already know the answer to this question from the intro, and I doubt you will find a single (genuine) review that will tell you not to visit San Miguel de Allende.
We first visited San Miguel a few years ago and instantly fell in love with the muted colours, amazing food, and incredible architecture. So it was an easy decision to add it as a stop on our rent epic 100-day Mexico road trip.
How many days do I need in San Miguel?
San Miguel is extremely popular as a short break or weekend getaway, but to fully appreciate how beautiful and special this town is you should be considering a stay of between 4 days to a week.
We are not saying that a weekend in San Miguel de Allende will not allow you to have a special and memorable experience, just that it is the kind of place that is so beautiful that it makes you feel you belong, and want to stay.
If you decide on a longer visit you will have time to visit the nearby archaeological site of Cañada de la Virgen, take a day to explore the pretty streets, eat yourself into a food coma, take in all of the iconic views, and understand why so many expats have decided to make San Miguel home.
How do you get to San Miguel de Allende?
Getting to San Miguel de Allende is a relatively straightforward process, with several transportation options for travellers. Whether arriving from within Mexico or internationally, here are ways to reach this charming town.

Prepare to be visually assaulted (in the best way possible) by the architectural wonderland and kaleidoscope of earthy colours that is San Miguel de Allende!
As you navigate the charming cobblestone streets, you’ll find yourself in a game of “spot the quirky architectural feature”.
Balconies with intricately designed wrought iron railings? Check. Arched windows that make you feel like you’re peering into a magical world? Check. And let’s not forget about the wooden doors that are so ornately carved, you half-expect them to start speaking to you.
But it’s not just about the aesthetics here. These perfectly manicured buildings are like the town’s way of saying, “Hey, let’s make this a place to have pride in, and to show the rest of the world how it’s done!” They’re like the architectural equivalent of a whimsical wink.

We had our first experience with Tostilocos (or Dorilocos) at one of the small food carts in San Miguel de Allende, and it was weirdly delicious!
Take a bag of Tostitos or Doritos, choose your add-ons from a range of candy, nuts, and other unexpected snacks, top it all with your choice of salsa, and see what happens.
The combination of hot sauce, corn chips, and gummi bears sounds disgusting but somehow it works. Our favourite corn chip for this was the Salsa Verde flavoured Tostitos, but try it for yourself.
For those seeking a more upscale dining experience, San Miguel de Allende boasts a thriving culinary scene that showcases the fusion of traditional Mexican flavours with international influences.
Our most memorable food experience in San Miguel de Allende took place in a long-established, and very well-known restaurant near the town centre called Los Milagros. They serve arguably the best Molcajete in Mexico.
A Molcajete is a selection of meat, cheese, and vegetables brought to the table in a scalding hot bowl made from lava rock, which holds the heat for more than enough time to enjoy your meal.
If you’re a food enthusiast looking to enhance your culinary skills, San Miguel de Allende offers cooking classes and workshops.

For a unique luxury experience, Casa del Tio Hotel Boutique is a great choice. This beautiful property is minutes from the town centre, has amazing views from the rooftop terrace, and includes breakfast.

The weather in San Miguel de Allende is generally pleasant throughout the year, with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The peak tourist season occurs from November to April when the weather is most comfortable.
If you prefer a quieter and less crowded experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and fall (September to November).
How is the walkability?
In and around the Zocalo (town square) you will plenty to explore on relatively level ground. The only issue may be the cobblestone streets may make it harder for some people.
As you head more than a few blocks from the centre, or if you plan on heading up the the Mirador for the spectacular views, the roads will get steeper.
Is San Miguel de Allende worth visiting? Our opinion.
From the first moment we arrived in San Miguel de Allende, we could tell it is a special place.
While the buildings didn’t have the brightly-coloured facades of other towns like Oaxaca, the earthy tones throughout the town created an incredibly tranquil vibe. And the more we saw, the more we appreciated the beauty this palate created.
The town square, or Zocalo, must rate among the most picturesque in all of Mexico, but don’t be fooled by the peaceful atmosphere throughout the middle of the day, with people sitting on the park benches, shaded by the perfectly manicured trees, or taking the opportunity for a short siesta.
When the evening comes this place goes from siesta to fiesta in quick time! You will find vendors walking around looking like the old guy from “Up” with their massive array of colourful balloons for the children, food carts selling snacks, or the unbelievably delicious nieves.
And don’t be surprised to find yourself stuck in the middle of a cultural dance performance, mariachi show, or even a wedding that has spilled out from the Parroquia.
Everything about this town leads you towards loving it even more every day you are here. If you think that you have been to Mexico just because you spent a weekend in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, or Cancun then do yourself a massive favour and experience real Mexico in San Miguel de Allende.
And if you are worried about the language barrier rest assured you will easily find either a local or expat ready to help you out. English is widely spoken but don’t let that stop you from at least making an effort to try some Spanish.
A bit of an effort shows respect for the culture and goes a long way towards you being accepted more quickly.
