And with one of the most spectacular backdrops of any town in Mexico, Bernal must rate as one of the most beautiful of the Pueblos Magicos. It may be small but it will leave a lasting impression.

Take a leisurely stroll through the town’s picturesque neighbourhoods, and you’ll encounter architectural gems that have withstood the test of time. The San Sebastián Parish Church, a magnificent Baroque masterpiece dating back to the 17th century, stands as a testament to Bernal’s rich religious history.

Simply get one of the cheap moto-taxis found throughout the town, pay a few pesos, and have them take you to the base.

From there you can take an easy walk to the base viewing area, grab a coffee or a cold drink, and pull up a chair and admire your surroundings. Getting a ride back into the town centre is just as easy as getting here.

Food lovers will find their taste buds dancing with delight in Bernal. In one of the local restaurants on the town square, I had my first experience with Tortas Ahogadas. Now we are both partial to a good torta at any time, but these are something special. The bun is dipped in red salsa and then fried on the grill before the fillings are added. You need to try these!

We also had some of the best, and cheapest, tacos of our entire trip through Mexico at one of the local street food taquerias which were on the main road just outside of the old town. In fact, everything here was amazing except for a very disappointing pizza we had one night in the town centre.

There are a few really cool restaurants/bars with rooftops that will give you some awesome views of the town and the Peña. The food and the cocktails were good but expensive compared to other options available in Bernal.

What started out at the beginning of our stay as an annoying, almost constant boom of exploding fireworks, and not the pretty coloured ones, actually marked the beginning of the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz. We had no idea this was on during our stay but being in the middle of this traditional cultural event made our stay in Bernal a standout of our 5-month adventure.

Where do I find the town name letters in Bernal?

Like many Mexican towns, Bernal has large, colourful letters spelling out the town name. Unlike most other towns the letters of Bernal are not in the town centre but a few blocks away, located to take advantage of the magnificent backdrop of the Peña.

To get to the letters begin at the Gazebo and head down the alley behind the Parroquia where you will intersect with Calle 5 de Mayo. Turn right and then left into Calle Cristóbal Colón. At the next intersection, turn left onto Calle Independencia, and in a minute or two you will see a small amphitheatre on your right, and inside the gates, you will find the letters.

The view here is impressive and you may even be lucky enough to be there during one of the many local events held in the amphitheatre.

Road Trip possibilities

Not only is Bernal a great option for a day trip from Mexico City, but it is ideally located to be a part of an amazing road trip starting in Queretaro, that takes in some of Mexico’s most beautiful towns. Take a week or two of easy driving and discover gems like San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, Bernal, Tequisquiapan, Cadereyta de Montes, San Juan del Rio, and Amealco de Bonfil.

We collected our car in Queretaro and made our way to Bernal. San Miguel de Allende was not part of this road trip for us as we decided to use Uber to get us there and back from Queretaro, only because we wanted to stay in the old town centre and, while cars can still get around most of the streets in the centre, accommodation options are way fewer if you need to park a car.

Bernal is less than an hour’s drive from Queretaro and only about 20 minutes from the International Airport. Which made it the perfect place for Pauline and me to stay while we waited to collect Junior from the airport a few days after we arrived.

Cadereyta makes an easy day trip from Bernal or can be done as a short stopover on the way to the next gem, which for us was Tequisquiapan.

This entire road trip is just under 400 km (or about 250 miles), but the towns we visited in this area quickly rekindled our love of Mexico and showed us why most of them are considered Pueblos Magicos, or Magic Towns.

Our opinion of Bernal

Our epic road trip through Mexico was heavily influenced by our desire to experience as many of the beautiful small towns of Mexico as possible, the Pueblos Magicos, and Bernal was the first stop on our adventure from our starting point in Queretaro.

We knew very little about the town except that it lived in the shadow of one of the three largest monoliths in the world. And being Aussies and having Uluru, the largest of these in our backyard, we were interested in a comparison.

It turns out that they are very different. And I must admit that having a movie-set perfect Mexican town at the base of this enormous rock really does create something very special. The town and its location are truly outstanding!

Not only does Bernal have one of the prettiest town squares in Mexico, but it exudes an incredible atmosphere of tranquil country living, and you can immediately tell that the locals have enormous pride in their town.

Almost everything we ate during our stay was well above average, delicious, and extremely inexpensive. From mouthwatering breakfast treats and smoothies at Veintidós Café, to the lunchtime gorditas and tortas ahogadas at Gorditas Doña Coco, and finishing with the super cheap, and awesomely delicious street tacos and extras at Taqueria La Flamita.

Getting caught in the middle of the festivities and excitement of the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz was the icing on the cake, putting Bernal firmly in the running for the most outstanding experience we had in Mexico. I can not emphasise more that you should definitely take more than just a day trip to Bernal if you are in Mexico City. It deserves more of your attention and you won’t regret it.
